Today the Erie Canal is an important part of the New York State Canal System. This system also includes the Champlain Canal, Cayuga-Seneca Canal and Oswego Canal. The NYS Canal System and the many cities, towns and villages all along it are being used for their scenic beauty and rich role in the history of New York State and America. The continuous part of the NYS Erie Canal Heritage Trail starts in the Town of Lockport, and goes through out New York State to the village Waterford. These trails are used for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and in some sections, for horseback riding.
